Our planet contains a rich diversity of living creatures which range in complexity from the relatively simple unicellular bacteria to complex, multicellular organisms composed of hundreds of different types of specialized cells. Organizing this array of life forms has been a slow process which is far from complete. The purpose of this course is to expose you to a representative cross section of life forms on this planet. The understanding of these organisms which you gain from this course will enhance your appreciation of the rich diversity of life on earth.
The prerequisite for taking Biological Diversity (ZOO 200) is BIO 101 or BIO 151.
Course Goals:
The primary goal of the course will be to examine the tremendous diversity of organisms in the 5 kingdoms of life.
General Education Goal 6:
Students will understand the fundamental principles of the natural sciences and apply scientific methods or inquiry to investigate the natural world.
Objective 1: Participate in scientific inquiry in a laboratory experience.
Objective 3: Demonstrate an understanding of fundamental principles of natural sciences.
Objective 5: Understand the implications science has for the modern world.
