Thesis research: Phragmites australis (common-reed) is a cryptic invasive species in North America. Because it forms dense monospecific stands it is considered a threat to wetland biodiversity. Human activities with subsequent disturbances, nutrient increase, changes in water levels and, more recently, the introduction of an invasive haplotype from Europe are some of the causes responsible for its expansion.
Through a combination of fieldwork, a microcosm experiment to investigate the influence of soil texture and nutrient content on Phragmites growth and a genetic analysis, namely the restriction fragment-length polymorphism (RFLP) analyses proposed by Saltonstall (to determine whether the invasive populations are native or introduced), Tulbure's research will aim at better understanding the cases responsible for Phragmites expansion in the Great Lakes wetlands.
