Oak Lake Science Camp 2008

ARRIVING

 

I arrived at the Oak Lake Field Station between 4-6 P.M. and had sloppy Joe for supper.

We got a water bottle, field journal, and a SDSU folder.

Later we a made bug press, bug catcher, bug box, and Secchi Disks and stayed up till 11:30 P.M. talking.

 

Day 1

Today we went on a walk at 9:00 A.M. to learn about prairie plants and collect plants to press.

Then had lunch at12:00 P.M.

After lunch we did geo cashing while we were doing that we took Kessler readings. Then took water samples and tested the sight distance in oak lake. After that we went swimming then had supper worked on our blog had root- beer floats played Toss up and charades until 11:00 P.M. and went to bed.

Day 2

 

Today In the morning we learned how to catch and tag birds we caught 7 birds.

Then we had turkey sandwiches for lunch and went to the lake to catch water insects my favorite bug was the crawdad.

We also looked for insects in the middle of the lake for insects.

After that we had chicken for supper.

Then we went to the lab to work on our blog and name our plant presses.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Day 3

 

Today in the morning we collected bugs for our bug collection.

My favorite insect is the dragonfly because I like the bright colors that they have on their body and wings. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bugs

When we caught the bugs we put them in kill jars.

Then we went back to the lab took them out of the kill jars and put pins through the bugs.

Then put them in boxes.

After that we had bologna sandwiches for lunch.

After lunch we got Missouri golden rod, and choke cherries to use for our tie-dye.

Then we set our traps for snapping turtles and ground squirrels.

Then we had pizza for supper and went to the lab to work on our blog.

Then did yoga till 11:00 P.M.

 

 

 

 

 

Day 4

 

I started the day off with coa-coa puffs and trix cereal.

We started the day with taking tree core samples with a core sampler that we drilled into the tree then we pulled it out.

Then we had turkey sandwiches for lunch (again) and Nathan ate a pickle wrapped in cheese!

After lunch we checked our small mammal traps and we caught three 13 lined ground squirrels and one mouse which we set free.

Then we went to check our turtle trap witch

We didn’t catch anything there then we went to the lab to dissect owl pellets and work on our blog had supper and stayed up till 11:00 P.M.

Tomorrow is our last day here at camp
