APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Incoming students should apply through the SDSU Financial Aid Office. Current SDSU students should apply to their home department and college. All Biology/Microbiology Departmental scholarships will be awarded based upon information provided in the Departmental Application Form. The forms are available from the Department's Ag Hall 304 office. Completed forms must be returned to this office by February 2, 2001. If you desire more information about specific scholarships or would like a copy of the application form, please contact the Head of the Biology/Microbiology Department, Dr Gary Peterson.

Additional scholarships are available to our students either through the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences, or the College of Arts and Science. You can pick up the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences Scholarship Application Forms from Interim Dean Charles McMullen (Ag Hall 156; 688-5133). They are available at the beginning of the spring semester. Completed forms must be returned to the same office by February 15. Scholarship application forms for the College of Arts and Science can be picked up from Dean Herbert Cheever or Assistant Dean Allen Branum (Nursing/Home Economics Building 251; 688-6619). Preference for the Arts and Science Scholarships will be given to applications received before January 31.

SDSU Undergraduate Research Awards are also available to students who are involved in undergraduate research projects (see below).

A. A. HOFER AND ORVILLE and ENOLI BENTLEY UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH AWARDS

The objective of this award is to stimulate undergraduate research achievements SDSU. A cash award is given at the end of the academic year to the junior student or students judged by the Awards Committee to have submitted an outstanding research report. The judging is based primarily on originality and creativity of the work submitted, an is open to students who have participated in agricultural research at South Dakota State University.

Rules governing the award include:
*Papers will be judged by the Scholarship Committee of the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences. Papers must be submitted in Ag Hall 154 by March 1.
*Candidates for the awards shall either be enrolled as a junior student in one of the colleges of South Dakota State University or shall present evidence from the major advisor that they will not graduate before the time of the next year's competition.
*Candidates should make application to be considered for the award by submitting:
a. Research report which embodies the results of participation in scholarly agricultural research on the part of the candidate and the project leader.
b. Statement indicating how the candidate feels that the study will be a contribution to knowledge or the understanding of present knowledge.
c. State as to the student's post-graduate plans.
d. Complete the application on the back of this brochure and attach application to your research report.

*The awards shall be given to the students who, in the opinion of the Committee, present papers best exemplifying original research and scholarship.
*The Awards Committee reserves the right not to make the award in any year in which suitable candidates do not apply or a suitable research report is not submitted.

It is expected that recipients of an award will share with the donors their own reflections as to their career goals and aspirations, as well as how their university experience has broadened their horizons as they approach the end of their college careers.

SCHULTZ-WERTH UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH AWARDS

Established to promote and recognize the scholarly achievements of undergraduate students, the Schultz-Werth Award bears the names of two distinguished alumni of South Dakota State University. Theodore Schultz, a Nobel Laureate in Economics, and his wife, Esther F. Werth, have long maintained the philosophy that the world's most important economic resource is the acquired abilities of people. Because of their belief in the importance of investing in people through education, Theodore Schultz and Esther Werth Schultz established this award to recognize outstanding scholarly endeavors of undergraduate students at South Dakota State University., Each year, since 1964, SDSU has continued the founders' philosophy of investment in people through education by bestowing the Schultz-Werth Award to senior students demonstrating outstanding scholarship through creativity and research.

A maximum of $2,500 is awarded to senior students who submit outstanding papers which reflect their individual research. Each paper mist be submitted by a single author. The Schultz-Werth Award Committee evaluates the papers on originality, creativity, and scholarship. Multiple awards are usually given, depending upon the quality of papers and available funds.

Eligibility


Candidates for the award must be enrolled as a senior student in one of the colleges of SDSU.

Competition is open to students in any major who meet the above criteria

Submission of Research

Papers will be submitted and judged in one of two categories:

1) Social sciences, humanities, fine arts, and education

OR

2) Natural science, agriculture, engineering, nursing, home economics, and pharmacy.

Application Procedure

Interested students should make preliminary application before the end of the sixth week of the Spring Semester through the office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs. At this time, a candidate will submit the tentative title of his/her proposed paper and receive materials for completing the application process.

The completed paper shall be submitted to the Award Committee no later than April 15.

The Schultz-Werth Award Committee consists of six faculty members representing the physical and biological sciences, social sciences, and the humanities and fine arts. The Vice President for Academic Affairs chairs the Committee.

Awards shall be given to the students who, in the opinion of the Committee, present papers best exemplifying original research, scholarship and creativity.
