The Joseph F. Nelson Graduate Scholarship is open to graduate students at Souther Dakota State University who are in good standing with the University and meet the criteria for the award.
CRITERIA: The student must have successfully completed 15 semester credit hours of academic work toward a master's or doctoral degree. The student must be completing, as a part of the degree, original research, preferably in one of the following sciences: physics, chemistry, physical geography, biology, soils, geology, mathematics or other physical sciences. Awards are restricted to students pursuing thesis option. Exceptions may be made for substantive defined original research papers recommended by the advisor.
Applicants must be of good moral character and must not use drugs or be habitual users of tobacco or alcoholic beverages.
APPLICATION: Scholarship applications can be obtained from the Office of the Graduate School. Completed applications will be due in the Office of the Graduate School on or before the first day of classes for the fall semester.
AWARD: The award will be for $5,000 plus tuition and fees and payable $2,500 per semester. The recipient must remain in good standing (3.0 or above GPA) to receive the award. The award does not have to be made in consecutive semesters but the student must have and approved plan to receive the award. The award will be available after census date of each semester and before the 29th day of classes. The award may be renewed at the discretion of the Joseph F. Nelson Committee.
EVALUATION: Applications will be evaluated by the Joseph F. Nelson Scholarship Committee. They will be evaluated on potential for successful completion of the degree, the subjective evaluation of the research work, and written information from the thesis advisor and applicant. Financial need is not to be a factor in selection of the recipient and this award is not intended to replace any part of a graduate assistantship.
PUBLICITY: The applicant must agree to provide personal
information as normally needed for publicity of the award and permit use
of name, picture and statement of significance of scholarly activity in
such publicity. The applicant also must agree to provide, at the end of
the graduate degree, a statement of accomplishment detailing how the award
was used. This statement is intended for use by the SDSU Foundation with
