This special occasion honors scholarship winners for the 1999-2000 academic year who are majoring in Biology (Botany, Zoology & Biology options), Microbiology and Environmental Management. Listed are departmental majors who were awarded scholarships in the Department, the Colleges of Arts & Sciences and Agriculture & Biological Sciences and at the University level. Incoming freshmen awardees who declared a departmental major are also listed.

Dr. Halling graduated from Tyler, Minnesota High School and received her B.S. in Chemistry from South Dakota State University in 1965. She earned a Master of Science degree in Bacteriology at SDSU in 1967. Her thesis work was under Dr. E. C. Berry wherein they studied the effect of arsenical compounds on the growth of K.lebsiella pneumoniae. Her work also involved the effect of arsenic on microbial degradation of livestock waste in waste-water lagoons. She taught at College of St. Teresa at Winona, Minnesota, from 1969 to 1974 where she obtained the rank of Assistant Professor. Shirley received her Ph.D. from the University of Iowa at Iowa City in 1975.
 

Dr. Halling was a Post-Doctoral Fellow in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of California at Davis from 1975 to 1977. She spent a year in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and three years as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
 

From 1981 to 1987 she was Senior Scientist, Molecular Genetics, Inc., Minnetonka, Minnesota. She is currently Supervisory Microbiologist and Lead Scientist, Brucellosis Research Unit, National Animal Disease Center, Ames, Iowa.
 

Dr. Halling has authored or co-authored 37 or more research papers in nationally and internationally-recognized journals.
 

Dr. Halling belongs to and has been honored by many prestigious societies and organizations. We are very proud to honor Shirley as our ALUMNA OF THE YEAR.
