This Hodgeson Scholarship was established by Herbert Hodgeson, one of the first graduates of SDSC. He was originally from Huron, graduating from State in 1898. The Biology Scholarship was designated in memory of Professor Thomas Albert Williams, Professor of Botany from 1891 to 1906, who was Mr. Hodgeson's mentor. His trust also support scholarships in Math, Chemistry and English.

Dr. Holden, a Webster, SD native and Professor Emeritus of Biology at SDSU, served for 31 years in the department,1956-1988. He was department head in the Botany Dept. from 1958-1967. He received his BS from SDSC in 1950, and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in Botany.
During his tenure here, he did natural area surveys in South Dakota and North Dakota. In of the outcomes of his efforts was his book "DAKOTAVISIONS." He worked very closely with The Nature Conservancy and was instrumental in the establishment of six native prairie preserves in South Dakota. Both ardent naturalists, Dave and Nelda led Christmas Bird Count field trips for many years. In 1983, Dave was presented the John Robertson Memorial award in Horticulture for his work in preservation of native prairie plants. The scholarship is administered by the South Dakota Ornithologist's Union and is awarded to an applicant demonstrating an interest in preserving our Biological Natural Heritage with emphasis in plant ecology or environmental biology.

This scholarship was established by family and friends of the Grebs. Dr. Ray Greb was born in 1899 in NowySacz, Poland. He received a MS and PhD from the University of Pittsburgh in Genetics. Dr. Magnhild Greb was born in 1903 in Sisseton, South Dakota. She received a MS in Genetics from the University of Chicago and her PhD in Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh where she met her husband.
They moved to Huron in 1936 where they taught at Huron College until1946 when they moved to SDSC, Ray in the Zoology Department and Magnhild in the Chemistry Department. He retired in 1968, she in 1969, after which she taught Summer School until 1973.

This scholarship honors Dr. Ward L. Miller, longtime member and head of the Botany Department. It is to be given to a sophomore or junior who has given evidence of scholastic achievements, with preference given to majors in the botanical sciences. It was given by gifts from family and friends of Dr. Miller.
Dr. Miller came to SDSU in 1928 and became Professor Emeritus in 1963.During these 35 years of service, he was noted as an outstanding teacher, department head and advisor. He chose to educate his students, friends, and colleagues with humor, magic and inspiration; in so doing he accomplished his goal of turning learning into a pleasure.

During his 28 years of service to SDSU, John P. McAdaragh worked at the Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratory, where he developed a variety of diagnostic procedures to detect and evaluate infectious diseases. He also taught courses in cell culture techniques and virology. This scholarship is awarded to Microbiology majors with an interest in Veterinary Medicine.

3M has a continuing interest and belief in science education and wants to show its support as a part of its responsibility to the community of Brookings. One part of that support is its annual scholarships to students who are majoring in Microbiology at SDSU. The association between3M and the Microbiology Department is very strong and Microbiology plays an important role in many products that 3M manufactures.

Scholarship established as a bequest from the estate of Mrs. Mabel Adams Eberly. She was a 1925 graduate of SDSC in General Science. At the time of her enrollment at SDSC, she was a resident of Lake Preston. She later received an MS degree from USD. While at State, Mabel sang in the girls glee club, was a member of the YWCA and served on several student committees.
Mabel was married to George Eberly in 1936 at which time they moved to Sheldon, Iowa where they spent the remainder of their 47-year marriage until his death in 1983. She passed away in 1985. Mrs. Eberly was a public school teacher until her retirement. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Daughters of the American Revolution.

Chris Lakner Cordts, a native of Wessington Springs, SD, graduated from State in 1989. She attended the University of S. Florida working on a degree in Business Administration. Chris received the Alumna of the Year Award in 1995 for her outstanding success in the rise to Executive status with Parke-Davis, a pharmaceutical firm and a subsidiary of Warner Lambert. Chris is also active in the National Association of Female Executives, the Epilepsy Society of America and the Alzheimer Society.
