Course Overview and Objectives
Biology undergraduate seminar is designed to introduce sophomore level biology and environmental management majors to the various career opportunities available in the biological sciences.  Two sections of the course are offered each semester.  One section (Bio 290E) will focus primarily on careers related to ecology and environmental sciences.  The other section (Bio 290M) will focus more on the remaining areas of the biological sciences, including those in the biomedical sciences.  For each section, guest speakers will discuss various aspects of their profession including : (1) the various career opportunities available in their field, (2) the advantages and disadvantages of their profession, (3) educational training and character tract requirements for their type of profession and (4) how students might improve their marketability in this profession while at SDSU.  Assignments for the course require that students (1) develop an internet career portfolio that will be maintained on the department server, (2) establish a set of career goals and a plan for attaining these goals, (3) locate job announcements in their area of career interest, (4) prepare a futaristic resume, and (5) compose a predictive letter of recommendation.   A similar course is offered for microbiology majors entitled: Micro 390: Undergraduate Seminar.  The format of this microbiology course is very similar to that of the biology course.
