Research Assistant Professor

Salary/Benefits: $44,000-$46,000/year plus fringe benefits, depending on qualifications and experience. 

Location: South Dakota State University, Brookings, South Dakota

General Statement of Function: To conduct innovative research on the molecular biology of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (75% time) and participate in molecular diagnostic and serology functions of the South Dakota ADRDL (25% time).  Continuation of employment and rank advancement will be dependent on the development of an independent, extramurally funded research program. 

Principle Duties: To carry out cutting-edge basic and translational research on infectious diseases, with an initial focus on porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV).  This research is expected to focus on the molecular analysis of PRRSV and the development of new diagnostic and vaccine strategies.  The diagnostic responsibilities will involve new assay development and validation, as well as routine diagnostic service.  The successful candidate will be expected to complement the existing expertise and research programs of the CIDRV and Department of Veterinary Science at South Dakota State University, and develop Her/his research program through pursuit of extramural funding. 

Supervisory Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to supervise and train undergraduate researchers, graduate students and research technicians. 

Minimum Qualifications (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skill, Aptitude):

  • Earned PhD in microbiology or a related field.
  • Must have experience and interest in molecular and biochemical analysis of Nidoviruses.
  • Must have experience in classical viral techniques and hybridoma/monoclonal antibody production.
  • Must have experience in food animal serology and molecular diagnostics.
  • Evidence of successful scholarly research ability in molecular biology and virology as measured by publications in peer-reviewed international journals.
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with research colleagues, students, and the public.
  • Willingness to collaborate with existing research within the CIDRV.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Publication record focusing on the molecular biology of Arteriviruses.

  • Experience as a laboratory manager of an active research laboratory.

  • Experience in the construction and manipulation of Nidovirus reverse genetic clones.
  • Experience in the development and validation of diagnostic serology and molecular assays.
