Oak Lake Summer Science Camp

Hands-0n Exploration and Discovery

August 3-8, 2008

The SDSU Oak Lake Science Camp offers opportunities for hands-on, small-group learning experiences in the fields of environmental science and biology.  The Oak Lake Field Station is a 570 acre facility located 25 miles northeast of the SDSU campus and near the Minnesota border.  The station sits alongside Oak Lake, providing a great mixture of grassland, forest and wetland habitats for students to explore and study.  Science camp participants stay at the station throughout the week.  Each day holds exciting new opportunities to study prairie vegetation and animal life.  Half-day activities are taught by university staff or natural resource agency personnel.  Student projects are designed to stimulate interest through hands-on activity in the field.  These projects may in-turn serve as starting points for science fair, 4-H and scout projects.

Science Camp is offered for middle-school students entering grades 6-8.  Students who have recently completed grade 8 but have not yet entered grade 9 may also apply.  An application and brochure describing our camp is available from the link below.  Interested students should download the brochure, complete the application and mail their application to the Department of Biology & Microbiology at SDSU.  Questions related to science camp may be directed to Ms. Kendra Hill (605-688-4560) using the contact information below.  Parents may also contact Ms. Vickie Molengraaf (605-688-6141) to have their child’s name put on our reservation list.  An enrollment cap of 15 students is maintained to enhance the learning experience for participants.  Thus, early registrants are more likely to find an opening.
